STILL NO POTATOES 14 September 2011
Sadly we will not be planting potatoes again in the 2011/2012 season. We have had no luck in finding a solution to the psyllid pest. Our potato trials over the past year have not given us any conclusive results.
NEWSFLASH 17 November 2010
It is with regret that we are letting you know that we will not be growing potatoes for the 2011 season. This difficult decision is due to the impact of the psyllid pest. This pest which came into New Zealand over four years ago has taken its toll on our potato crops, and we have battled with it since November 2008. The biggest impact for us has been on the size and quality of our potatoes, and of course the economic viability. We pride ourselves on producing quality certified organic vegetables and berry fruit, and have become compromised with our potato crop. Ever since the introduction of the psyllid pest we have spent considerable monies and energy into finding a solution, but to date in vain. We have had many scientists and researchers on our property, trying to get to the bottom of the problem. One prominent scientist believes that the answer will be found organically. We hope this will be sooner rather than later. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your wonderful support of our “true earth” potatoes
As one of our loyal customers has said ‘Once you have True Earth™ potatoes there is no going back’. We are probably biased but they do taste like ‘how grandad grew them’! We are so proud of our potatoes, we grow many varieties, the most popular being Agria - a great roasting, baking and mashing potato. Nadine is ideal for boiling, Moonlight, Red Desiree and Red Stroma are great for all purposes. We grow other varieties to suit our food processor customers who produce yummy organic soups and meals e.g. Pitango Innovative Cuisine. You will find your favourite True Earth™ potato variety in your local speciality organic store or supermarket in a 2 kg or 5kg bag. QuestionsWhy do potatoes sprout? As the soil temperatures warm up in the spring time potatoes naturally start sprouting in order to regenerate. All potatoes do this in the Spring, some varieties more than others. True Earth™ potatoes are not sprayed with sprout stopping pesticides to prevent this. Please just rub the small sprouts and use as per normal. How do I store my potatoes? Keep your True Earth™ potato bag in a dark cool environment. Our yummy organic potatoes do not appreciate light and warmth.
